The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said the North American company failed to adequately address regulatory concerns, and “My AI”, which launched in April, may be blocked in the UK.

“The interim conclusions of our investigation demonstrate Snap’s worrying failure to adequately identify and assess the privacy risks to children and other users before launching ‘My AI’,” Information Commissioner John Edwards said.
The findings do not mean that the instant messaging app, which is largely used by young people, has breached UK data protection law or that the ICO will ultimately issue an enforcement, outreach or regulatory notice.
Snap said that it is analyzing the ICO notification and is committed to the privacy of the two users. “O ‘My AI’ underwent a rigorous legal and privacy review process before being published,” a Snap spokesperson said.
“We will continue to work constructively with the ICO to ensure that they are comfortable with our risk assessment procedures.”
The ICO is investigating how “My AI” processed data from around 21 million Snapchat users in the UK, including children aged 13 to 17. “My AI” is powered by ChatGPT from OpenAI, a well-known generative AI example, which regulators around the world are trying to figure out how to regulate with respect to privacy and security issues.
