Japan tops the list of OECD countries with the highest fiber-optic penetration, with 87% of connections, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) annual report.
The report is based on broadband technology penetration rates between June 2021 and the same month in 2022.
South Korea is in second place with 84%, followed by Spain in third with 81%.
Optical fiber continues to be the most widespread technology in the organization as a whole, with a penetration rate of over 50% in 19 of the 38 member countries.
Fiber optic subscriptions increased by 12.3% annually, recording the largest increases in network development in Belgium (87%), Costa Rica (51%) and the United Kingdom (47%).
Meanwhile, 5G networks are available in 36 of the 38 OECD member countries. Globally, fifth-generation networks account for 17% of all high-speed mobile subscriptions in 14 countries with available data.
Penetration of this technology is highest in Japan, with 21% and 51.5 million subscribers, followed by South Korea (28.5% and 24.6 million subscribers) and Denmark (41% high-speed cellular subscribers and 3.5 million contracts).
In other technologies, cable recorded an annual increase of 2%, and continues to be the most widespread system in the Americas. ADSL subscriptions, meanwhile, fell 8.5% in the same period, according to the OECD report.
