Britain will have to deal with three of them this year – Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Truss had to step down after just a few weeks in the prime minister’s chair.
In September, an era came to an end when Queen Elizabeth died after 70 years on the throne.
In Northern Ireland, there were historic elections in May, in which the pro-Irish nationalist party, Sinn Féin, became the largest for the first time. There is still no Northern Ireland government.
In Scotland, the desire for a new referendum on independence is back on the agenda, and has also been a topic for the UK Supreme Court.
