The Civic Party, one of the largest opposition formations in Hong Kong, announced its dissolution

MADRID, May 27th. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –

The Civic Party, one of the main political formations in Hong Kong opposed to the Chinese government’s expansion of sovereignty over the territory, announced its dissolution on Saturday after 17 years of activity.

The announcement was made Saturday by the party’s president, Alan Leong, who confirmed the appointment of a “liquidator” to complete the procedure.

The decision was adopted by 30 of the 31 extraordinary assembly convened for this purpose, with only one abstention, after confirming that no party affiliate or member intended to run for the Presidency or the Executive Committee.

“It’s been said and done. No one wants to take control,” Leong complained in a statement collected on the RTHK chain, before confirming that party members had chosen to donate existing funds to charity.

The party, founded in 2006, peaked with six seats and was a major force in the protests taking place in the region against a security law imposed by Beijing, which its critics understand as a direct attack on dissent and defenders of the judiciary. Hong Kong’s autonomy was agreed upon the return of Britain in 1997.

Several of its members were charged with subversion by participating in an unofficial primary for the 2020 Legislative election, which led to several members leaving the party out of fear of reprisal.
