Recalling the call for a general election in the UK announced on Wednesday by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak MP, and his call for it to be held next Thursday, July 4, in conjunction with the dissolution of Parliament in Westminster, the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly issued a statement thanking them for their friendship, support and the cooperation of the British government and the entire political system towards the Islands.

In the statement, the spokesperson for the Legislative Council, which is actually the autonomous government of the Falklands, MLA Pete Biggs stated, “In light of the immediate dissolution of the House of Representatives and the call for a General Election, we would like to extend our special thanks to the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, for their unwavering support for the Falkland Islands, as well as all those who have supported the islands in their respective ministerial roles.”

“We would also like to thank the support of members of all political parties and the All Party Parliamentary Group Supporting the Falkland Islands, who have visited or shown an interest in the Falkland Islands since the last general election.”

“Among the visitors were the Foreign Secretary, Lord David Cameron of Chipping Norton; David Rutley MP. Minister for Overseas Territories, as well as a group of legislators from all political parties in the UK and the House of Lords. These visitors included many long-standing Falklands supporters, and for some, their visit was just the beginning of their personal connection with the Falklands.

“We look forward to continuing our long-standing permanent relations of friendship and cooperation with the current and subsequent British governments in all matters relating to the Falkland Islands,” concluded an official statement from the Islands’ Legislative Body.
