The mayor of Ecatepec and the British ambassador agreed to strengthen ties in the fields of education, climate change and technology

The president of the city of Ecatepec, Fernando Vilchis Contreras and the British ambassador to Mexico, Jon Benjamin, held a long meeting in which joint work plans were set out in the fields of education, climate change, innovation and technology.

The mayor explained that the meeting discussed the public security progress obtained in Ecatepec, the modernization of the Command Center and the installation of 1,600 Project Jaguar video cameras, in addition to the construction of the city’s planetarium, which will be located among the best observatories in the world.

They also visited the historic house where General Don José María Morelos y Pavón was shot.

Jon Benjamin announced that dialogue will continue with Ecatepec authorities to implement programs such as English language teaching, ecological actions and environmental awareness, and the use of technology in public policy.

He expressed interest in establishing cooperation between the British Embassy and the city government. “Hopefully this is just the beginning of a new stage in the relationship between my country (Britain) and our embassy with this municipality, with the mayor and recently we will return more often,” said the diplomat.

Vilchis Contreras recalled that during his administration, collaborative relations had been established with diplomats from the countries of Israel, Colombia, Nicaragua and South Africa. He announced his plans to enter into a cooperation agreement with the British Embassy in the near future.

Jon Benjamín has been Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Mexico since August 2021, joining Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service in 1986 and having represented the British Government in countries including Chile, Ghana, Turkey, Indonesia and the United States.

Before serving as ambassador, he was director of the Diplomatic Academy in London, then British ambassador to Chile (2009-2014), high commissioner to Ghana (2014-2017) and served as ambassador to Togo. , Benin and Burkina Faso. Apart from that, he also served as Acting Consul and then Consul General in New York (2005-2008).
