THE HAGUE, Netherlands.- The Dutch government said Tuesday it was not advising its officials to use TikTok or other apps run by countries with “cyber offensive devices” on their professional devices.
According to the Dutch Intelligence Service (AIVD), there is an “increased risk of espionage” through the use of TikTok or other apps run by countries such as Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.
The Dutch government advises its officials against using such apps, hoping to reach a “structural solution” that will make it impossible for them to use such apps on their professional devices.
“The central government must be able to carry out its work safely, also through its mobile devices,” said Alexandra van Hufflen, Secretary of State for Digitalization of the Netherlands.
The government wants all employees’ professional phones configured so that only pre-approved apps or functions can be installed and used.
As such, the Netherlands will follow Canada, the United Kingdom and US federal agencies, which have banned TikTok from government devices over data security concerns.
