Radar, traffic light cameras, cameras capable of detecting whether or not you’re wearing your seat belt, and the next jump: cameras that use artificial intelligence to check if you’ve committed a crime behind the wheel.
One of the busiest roads in England is starting to roll out this technology. Results? nearly 300 fines in the first three days of operation.
A ticket machine. great Britain have implemented For the first time, a road safety camera uses artificial intelligence to check whether a photographed driver has committed a crime or not. In the first three days of use, the data was striking: 117 violations related to cell phones and 180 with seat belts.
In 2022 the first test with this technology will be carried out, a 15-day test with the system implemented on several roads. In this two-week period, more than 600 crimes were detected.
Put an end to camera limitations: the use of artificial intelligence made it possible to remove the main limitations of radars and cameras. This is usually configured to identify a number of violations (speed cameras, red light cameras, etc.). Instead, this camera system takes photos, analyzes them using artificial intelligence, and determines what type of crime has been committed.
It is important to emphasize that, at least in this first phase of implementation, photographs pass through the final human filter before fines are issued. Despite this last check, cameras help categorize crimes in a much faster and more efficient way than they currently exist.
This is just the beginning. This is the first of many cameras the UK intends to install along its way. The aim is to monitor the nation’s busiest roads and Devon and Cornwall Police Head of Road Safety explained: “We are using this new technology to send a clear message to anyone who continues to use their mobile phone behind the wheel: you will be caught.”
This project is part of the plan Zero Vision London, a plan of action from the United Kingdom to ensure safety in its transport network and minimize accidents.
And what about Spain?. DGT is not far from the British proposal. There are currently more than 200 cameras on the national territory that can punish us for using a cell phone or not wearing a seat belt.
These images are sent to the Automated Complaints Treatment Center, where software analyzes the images and filters out images that could lead to sanctions. These images are manually reviewed by humans, who are in charge of verifying whether or not crime is present.
To this must be added the special control that the DGT has in Spain with other violations, such as speeding. By 2023, the number of mobile speed cameras on the road has increased by at least 70, more and more cascade radars are able to detect if we brake in front of the radar. AI has not yet appeared in our country, although DGT doesn’t seem to really need it.
