British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended the global strategy to ensure legal use of the device
The UK announced at this fifth (26th) exhibition that it will establish the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) security agency. The agency will be responsible for examining, evaluating, and testing new types of AI to identify and mitigate risks, such as bias, misinformation, crime, and the use of AI to create weapons.
The announcement was made by the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak (imagem), a week before the first world summit on AI risks, which will be held in the UK, between November 1 and 2.
Sunak said the agency was vital to ensuring AI was used safely and responsibly. “AI has the potential to revolutionize our lives, but it also presents significant risks,” he said. “We need to prepare for these risks and mitigate them.”
The institute will be funded by the UK government and will be based in London, led by an independent specialist board.
EU progress on AI rules
The UK announcement comes at a time when governments around the world are working to develop policies and regulations for AI. The European Union, for example, is developing an AI Law that will require AI systems to be safe and non-discriminatory.
Currently, the regulations need to be agreed through a meeting between parliament and EU member states to finalize the final version of the law, in a process known as a trilogue.
