The United Kingdom is considering using the Army to replace a striking customs security force

MADRID, November 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –

About 500 members of the British Army could begin the five-day training on November 21 to replace those in charge of the Border Force striking at the country’s ports and airports, according to sources from the Home Office.

The initiative comes after a vote on Thursday in favor of the strike being approved by the Public and Commercial Services union, which represents Border Force guards across the country.

However, there are still limits to be worked out for this deployment as, according to ‘The Guardian’ sources, the use of the Army for this purpose is a sensitive issue given that they will turn the military into a scavenging force and could end in a deal. with a problem as complex as the rise of migrant arrivals through the English Channel.

The Interior Ministry had to request Defense assistance under a military assistance protocol to civilian authorities, which leaves the final signature in the hands of the last current portfolio holder, Ben Wallace.

For now, the union’s general secretary, Mark Serwotka, described the Home Affairs request as “desperate” by the titular minister, Suella Braverman. “The Army made it clear that they don’t want to waste time covering up the government’s mistakes,” he said.

“Instead of seeking increasingly desperate solutions, the government should sit with us at the negotiating table and agree on a fair wage increase,” he added.
