MADRID, June 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Armed Forces of the United States and Britain have responded to distress calls from merchant vessels allegedly being “harassed” by Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz this Sunday.
The international flagged ship made a radio distress call at 16:56 (local time) when three fast attack boats with armed personnel approached and followed the ship at close range.
According to a statement by the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, the fast attack boats belong to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
London has sent reconnaissance helicopters to the area and Washington has dispatched maritime patrol aircraft. “The situation eased about an hour later, when the merchant ship confirmed that the fast attack craft had left the location,” the letter read.
The US Fifth Fleet reported in early May that a foreign-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was intercepted by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy and forced to move towards the coast. He also explained that it was the second incident of this kind in a week and lashed out that “over the past two years, Iran has harassed, attacked or interfered with the navigational rights of 15 foreign-flagged merchant vessels.”
