As is the case with some competing Amazon Echo devices, Google’s Chromecast often displays region lock. If you have purchased it at a store like eBay, without knowing where it came from, you may have encountered an error in its configuration.
Chromecast region lock
One of the problems you can find is, for example, Chromecast with Google TV (CCwGTV) not available in all countries. It only works in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom and United States (except Puerto Rico).
Therefore, if you try to access certain content outside of these countries, that content may not work properly on your Chromecast.
Connection problem via WiFi
Another regional issue you may experience on your Chromecast, stems not from the device itself, but from settings with your wireless network.
In certain countries, Chromecast can’t connect to Wi-Fi channels above certain frequencies, nor can it connect to the 5GHz band for dual-band routers.
Therefore the solution if you get an error of the type “it was manufactured for another country and may not be compatible with your WiFi network” is to tinker with the router configuration to select the 2.4 GHz frequency or limit the channel between 1 and 10for example.
After changing your wireless network settings, you may need to set up your Chromecast device again. To fix the problem, follow the steps below:
- Open the Google Home app the Google Home app.
- In the top-left corner, tap Add Set up device > New device.
- Complete the configuration steps that will be indicated by the wizard.
AP Isolation: WiFi network isolation
It has been reported that connection issues caused by Chromecast connection failures from other countries can be solved by AP isolation.
It AP Isolation is a router feature that allows wireless clients to be isolated from each other. This feature isolates all wireless devices using the network so that each device can communicate with the router, but not with each other.
This function effectively creates separate virtual network for each wireless device which is connected to the router and might be the solution to your problem with your foreign Chromecast. If this same WiFi client tries to communicate with other wireless devices in the same WiFi network, communication will be rejected, communication is not allowed.
While this functionality is usually available and configured by default in router guest WiFi networks, there are some manufacturers that also allow this very interesting function in their firmware to isolate wireless clients from each other.
