Chinese social network ICT tock wants to gain the trust of Brussels and its EU-based users. The app has announced this Tuesday that it has started storing data of its Internet users located in communities in Ireland, as it had promised in an effort to allay privacy fears, which could lead to that, in the future, the ‘app’ will no longer be function in the United States.
For years, TikTok has raised concerns among regulators around the world. In particular, they are concerned about its Chinese parent company, Bytedance, shares user data with the Chinese communist government. In addition, the company also made its app available to Beijing to direct organized disinformation campaigns against users.
To avoid suspicion, the company promised months ago to store all user data in Europe and America outside of China. The plan, which in the case of the EU and UK is called Clover, has already been launched, according to TikTok.
“Our first data center in Dublin, in Ireland, is up and running and data migration from European users to this center has started,” the social network reported in a statement sent to the ABC. The company also indicated that it is working on building two other centers that will also be used to store user data. One will be in Norway and the other will also be in Ireland.
The transfer will last until the end of 2024, said TikTok, which partners with a British cybersecurity firm, NCC, to “independently audit our data controls and protection, monitor data flows, provide independent verification, and report any incidents.”
Like most social networks, TikTok stores a large amount of information about its users. Among other things, some unnecessary services are offered, such as an IP address to estimate your location or your browsing history, which allows us to better understand your tastes. Although there are suspicions, the Chinese government’s alleged access to information related to the application has never been proven.
