UK ELECTION SPECIAL | Labour hoping for supermajority and Conservatives confident

It’s election day in the UK. Polls have been open since 8am. The Labour Party is looking to turn the country around and end 14 years of Conservative rule. Current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has indicated that he will take political responsibility, given the Tories’ expected defeat. In doing so, Sunak has called for a vote to make the disaster less embarrassing. Labour’s Keir Starmer is set to be elected this Thursday as the next prime minister, according to all opinion polls, although by how big a margin he will win remains to be seen.

Exit polls, after the closure of polling stations in the UK, marked a clear victory for the Labour Party with 410 seats. On the other hand, the Conservatives only had 131 positions. This result shows a significant increase for the Labour Party with 209 seats and the Conservatives lost 241 seats. The Liberal Democrats have won 61 seats.
