Brussels (EFE).- The Presidents of the Council, Commission and European Parliament, Charles Michel, Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola respectively, today congratulated Labour leader Keir Starmer on his “historic” victory in the UK general election and invited the British politician to work closely with the EU on challenges of “common interest.”
“Congratulations to Keir Starmer on his historic victory in the UK election. The EU and the UK are important partners who work together in all areas of common interest to our citizens,” Michel wrote on the social network X.
The European Council President added that he looked forward to working with the Government formed by Keir Starmer “in a new cycle for the UK.”

European Chamber President Roberta Metsola, who will also reiterate the position, also noted at X that “the relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom is rooted in shared values and our long-standing friendship” and “As allies and partners, it is in our common interest to continue working closely together,” she said.

Starmer’s Labour Party won a landslide victory in the election, winning with an absolute majority, and will take over the British government after meeting with King Charles III.
Irish Prime Minister congratulates Starmer
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris also congratulated Keir Starmer on his victory in the UK general election, and stressed that he looked forward to working with him as a “neighbour and close friend.”
“The relationship between Ireland and the UK has huge consequences for everyone on these islands. Keir Starmer and I share a desire to strengthen it in the years ahead,” Harris highlighted on his X social media account.
“I look forward to early collaboration with the incoming Prime Minister and a productive and mutually beneficial relationship between us,” he added.

Likewise, Israeli President Isaac Herzog sent “heartfelt congratulations” to Keir Starmer.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Keir Starmer. “As he prepares to enter Downing Street as Prime Minister, I look forward to working with him and his new government to bring our hostages home, build a better future for the region and deepen the close friendship between Israel and the UK,” Herzog said in a message on his X account.
Herzog, who developed his political career in Israel in the Labour Party, also expressed “deep appreciation and gratitude” to the outgoing prime minister, conservative Rishi Sunak, for “supporting the Israeli people during that very difficult period.”
Baltic leaders congratulated Starmer on his victory in the UK parliamentary elections, and expressed their desire to address the challenges facing the European continent, including security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated the leader of the British Labour Party and expressed his desire to continue working with London to strengthen relations between the two countries.
