LONDONOct 31 – UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman said on Monday she sent official government documents to her personal email address six times, raising new concerns about breaching ministerial regulations when she was in charge of state security.
Braverman was reappointed interior minister by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last week, six days after he stepped down from the same role for sending government documents from his personal email to an employee of an MP in violation of regulations.
Braverman stated that on that occasion he didn’t have a government phone with him, so he asked his assistant to send the documents to his personal email.
Sunak’s first days in office have been overshadowed by controversy over Braverman’s appointment. Opposition parties and even some lawmakers from the ruling Conservative Party have questioned his suitability for the post of Interior Minister.
In a letter to Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee on Monday, Braverman said his department’s review had identified six incidents between September 6 and October 19, when he transferred documents to his personal email.
Braverman said he sent the document so he could read it during virtual meetings and interviews on his government phone.
However, Braverman claims that none of the documents relate to national security, intelligence services, or cybersecurity issues and does not pose any risk to national security.
