UK imposes sanctions on major Russian airlines

The British government on Thursday announced new sanctions against major Russian airlines, including Aeroflot, barring them from reselling their slots in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s first air groups Aeroflot Ural Airlines and Rossiya Airlines will not be able to sell their slots – which are no longer allowed to be used at UK airports – for an estimated 50 million pounds ($62 million), it said in a statement. .

“As long as (Russian President Vladimir) Putin continues his barbaric attacks on Ukraine, we will continue to target the Russian economy,” said British diplomat Liz Truss.

Britain has closed its airspace to Russian aircraft shortly after the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, as well as its ports to Russian ships, and has banned exports of goods and technology to Russia’s aviation sector.

The new sanctions come as Britain becomes president of the International Transport Forum, an OECD intergovernmental organization, where it intends to “call for a united response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, London claims to have sanctioned more than a thousand people and 100 entities, and in particular the oligarchs who represent more than 117,000 million pounds sterling ($145,000 million).

According to London, these international sanctions brought Russia into “the deepest recession since the fall of the Soviet Union.”
