The UK has published today, via the LinkedIn website, job offers for positions Governor in Gibraltar and, in his job description, he acknowledged that “it is possible that we will face another period without a negotiated result” (in negotiations with the EU) and, therefore, that “That territory could go through a period of change.”.
“The UK,” said the announcement, “along with Gibraltar, is negotiating with the EU on Gibraltar’s future relationship with the EU. While we hope that these negotiations will conclude at the start of this period, it is also possible that we will face another period without a negotiated outcome. The region can experience periods of change while adapting to new relationships”.
The job offer text on Linkedin thus warns of future complications that could be faced by the person elected as the new British Governor of Gibraltar, as the position requires direct responsibility for territorial defense and internal security (including the police) and in foreign affairsapart from appointing various important officials and also being the guarantor of the “good governance” of Gibraltar’s local government.
“The location of Gibraltar – continuing the British Ministry announcement – means so Security issues remain a strategic priority. Under the Constitution of Gibraltar, the Governor (and eventually the United Kingdom) has the powers of internal defense and security and will therefore lead the assessment and mitigation of potential threats to Gibraltar and the interests of the Kingdom of the Kingdom, working closely with the Ministry of Defence, the British Forces Commander (CBF) Gibraltar and Government of Gibraltar. He will lead, along with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, the Gibraltar Contingency Council, and will lead the defense and security aspects of Gibraltar’s resilience. As Commander of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, you will work closely with the CBF, supporting their goal of ensuring a modern and agile military presence in Gibraltar.”
POSITION RESPONSIBILITY
The announcement on LinkedIn outlines the responsibilities of the post of Governor of the United Kingdom in Gibraltar as follows:
“To represent His Majesty the King in Gibraltar.
Act in accordance with the Constitution of Gibraltar and uphold it.
Exercising executive responsibilities, consistent with UK Government policy towards Gibraltar, including external relations, defence, internal security and certain functions in connection with public appointments in Gibraltar.
Collaborate with the Chief Minister and the Government of Gibraltar, and support the policies and activities of the UK Government.
Acting as Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in Gibraltar. The Chief of the Defense Staff will ensure that all named individuals, whether civilian or military, receive the necessary support and information to carry out these functions.
Playing a visible role in supporting public relations and maintaining a high public profile.
Lead a diverse team of local and UK-based staff, ensuring a team approach, with a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.”
It is also required to “be a British citizen at the time of submitting your candidacy.”
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST PUBLIC SELECTION
In fact, this is not the first time that the Government of London through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the offer and process for selecting the Governor of Gibraltar. In fact, the current governor, Mr David Bajawas also elected after a public announcement and served since June 2020.
