MADRID, February 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had assured this Wednesday that he would provide an additional package of military support to Ukraine, although Downing Street would not specify what “security reasons” would consist of.
Before the House of Commons, Johnson has defended the steps his government has taken to respond to Russia’s recognition of the independence of the rebel territories of Donetsk and Lugansk. On Tuesday, Britain sanctioned five Russian banks and three individuals with “great wealth.”
British opposition leader Keir Starmer has called on Johnson for legislation preventing Russian oligarchs from buying British property and companies, but Johnson has pointed out that no government can “do more” and given that 275 individuals have been sanctioned, the BBC has rounded up.
However, he has indicated that more action “is yet to come”. The UK has expressed its intention to impose sanctions on members of the Russian Parliament who have voted to recognize Donetsk and Lugansk.
In line with the UK sanctions, the European Union will from this afternoon implement the sanctions agreed upon by the Twenty-Seven in response to Russia’s recognition of Ukraine’s separatist territory.
