UK wants to protect children with age controls in video games, more work for developers

He great Britain will introduce a proposal for some games to have age control so that children are not exposed to inappropriate content. The project also includes suggestions for developers to encourage players to take breaks and stop playing from time to time.

According to the recommendations, these messages should be carried out in such a way that children “Don’t feel pressured to keep playing or afraid to miss out.” The new advice will become part of the UK Children’s Code.

It should be noted that this new proposal is nothing more than a suggestion on the part of the government. This means that developers are not required to buy into these new ideas or apply them to their games.

One of the best parts of this advice is that it’s suggested limit the amount of content and sponsored ads on the server associated with the game.

The big problem with these proposals is that they don’t indicate who will be in charge of these controls, or how it should be done. The document only proposes that the developer must “check and document how to identify English players under the age of 18 and find out their correct age with some degree of precision.

The UK recommends that this applies to all games and digital commerce. According to a 2019 investigation, 93% of children in the region play video games and spend an average of 3 hours a day playing video games.
