MADRID, June 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Britain’s Intelligence Service said on Wednesday that Russia was making “significant efforts” to strengthen its defense lines, especially around the Crimean peninsula, which it annexed in 2014.

“Heavy fighting continues in southern Ukraine. However, in recent weeks Russia has continued to make significant efforts to establish defensive lines deep behind it, especially around occupied Crimea,” they said.

As such, they have detailed that “this includes a nine-kilometre wide defense zone approximately 3.5 kilometers north of the city of Armiansk, on the narrow land bridge connecting Crimea with the Kherson region,” according to a statement published by the Ministry. of Defense of the United Kingdom on its account on the social network Twitter.

“These defense complexes underscore the Russian command’s assessment that Ukrainian forces are capable of attacking Crimea directly,” they said, before stressing that “Russia continues to consider maintaining control of the peninsula a top political priority.” .

The Crimean peninsula, and especially Sevastopol, where the Russian Naval base is located, is a key target for Ukrainian troops, who use drones and missiles to hit Russian targets. The territory was annexed in 2014, a move not recognized by the international community.
