The Renewable Energy Institute (IER) UNAM and the University of Birmingham, UK, promote initiatives to implement the use of renewable energy equipment and eco-technology for household use for the benefit of Mexican households living in energy poverty.
Through the academic plan “Mitigation of energy poverty with a focus on capabilities through innovative community solutions” educational institutions work with households in the State of Mexico and Puebla to raise awareness and publicize the benefits and operations use of clean alternatives in daily life.
I “The first thing we did was a new index to assess energy poverty in society; then produce inclusive knowledge, that is, by significantly involving the people we work with to be able to implement technological solutions, because it is about generating social innovation through participatory knowledge construction”, Tumbn and researcher, Karla Cedano Villavicencio.
Among the tasks they carry out are monitoring the physical condition of the house, qualitative and demographic analysis, and installation of energy technologies such as biodigesters, DC refrigerators; water heaters and pumps, lighting, photovoltaic systems, kitchens, ecological stoves and water heaters.
“With this activity, inclusive knowledge is generated, with an emphasis on the capacities of everyone in the home, and the idea of energy as a way to prosper.”
“To date, CaPAS members are working with families from Atlautla, State of Mexico; and from Cuetzalan, Puebla. Soon they will be implementing it in Amayuca, Morelos, and Tzentzénguaro, Michoacán”, reports the highest study house.
Among the project’s impacts are integrating and comparing methodologies with how to measure energy poverty; increase the satisfaction of energy needs; and develop guidelines for the application of energy technology in everyday life.
