The United States and the United Kingdom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together to develop state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) testing models, fulfilling commitments made at the Security in Artificial Intelligence Summit last November, a statement said. from the United States Department of Commerce.
The agreement, signed by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and UK Technology Minister Michelle Donelan, will allow the two countries to align their scientific approaches and work together to accelerate and iterate a robust set of assessments for AI models, systems and agents.
The American and British AI Security Institutes have outlined plans to establish a common approach to AI security testing and share their capabilities to ensure these risks can be addressed effectively. They intend to conduct at least one trial together in a publicly accessible model. They also plan to leverage their collective pool of experience by exploring personnel exchanges between agencies.
This partnership will take effect immediately and aims to enable the two organizations to work together smoothly. AI continues to advance rapidly, and both countries recognize the need to act now to ensure a shared approach to AI safety that can offset the emerging risks of the technology. As countries strengthen their partnerships in the area of AI safety, they also commit to developing similar partnerships with other countries to promote safety around the world.
“AI is the technology that defines our generation. This partnership will accelerate the work of both institutions across a wide spectrum of risks, both to national security and society at large. Our association makes it clear that we are not running away from this problem, but facing it head-on. “Through our collaboration, our institutions will gain a better understanding of AI systems, conduct more in-depth evaluations, and issue more stringent guidance,” said Raimondo.
