The government delegation in negotiations with the Venezuelan opposition has conditioned this Tuesday the continuation of the dialogue table for a release agreement
blocked funds, according to the agreement of both parties at the end of the year.

The head of the delegation, Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, has indicated that, if the return of the blocked US$3.2 billion is not met, dialogue will not resume. Rodríguez assured that “there is no reason to continue dialogue with those who do not speak out”, demanding that the opposition fulfill its commitments.

“There is nothing more reprehensible than signing a paper knowing that they will not fulfill their commitments,” he criticized while calling to avoid threats and sanctions.

In the last meeting between the government and opposition delegations at the end of 2022, the two sides agreed to disburse this amount of funds, currently frozen in international accounts due to US sanctions, with the aim of having them managed by the United Nations. to finance social projects.

Top diplomatic officials from the European Union, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom congratulated the parties on signing the agreement, despite the fact that they reaffirmed ongoing efforts culminating in holding “free and fair” elections in 2024, restoring institutions democracy and the end of the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela”.

Finally, the signatories reiterated their willingness “to review the sanctions policy” if the Venezuelan government achieves significant progress in talks to relieve the suffering of the Venezuelan people and bring them closer to the restoration of democracy.
