Vodafone will deploy the UK’s first standalone 5G network

Andrea Donà, network director for Vodafone UK, has warned that the sector will need financial support from governments and regulatory agencies to harness the full potential of autonomous 5G technology, while the operator himself announced that it will be the first company in the country to do so. set up such a network.

Donà explained that progress on autonomous 5G deployments has been slow, partly because carriers have to upgrade equipment at each location, which requires a significant financial commitment.

The manager added that the required support “could take the form of low-interest loans, reform of regulations on net neutrality, promotion of public procurement of 5G services or reduction of deployment barriers.”

Likewise, Donà understands that the rollout of autonomous 5G is “a very important step forward on the path towards creating a digital platform for innovation across all sectors of the UK”.

Vodafone has highlighted the benefits of video streaming, network play, increased indoor coverage, and better network security.

The operator has detailed its plans to carry out tests of its network management system, which automatically routes traffic to 4G and 5G networks depending on the service.

Donà’s statement coincides with the start of a trial by Vodafone for its customers in seven major cities equipped with compatible Samsung and Oppo terminals.

The test mentioned above is a new step for Vodafone in its plans for autonomous 5G. The operator is partnering with Ericsson in early 2022 to conduct in-lab demonstrations of tissue-slicing for VR use cases.
