When and why is it celebrated?

The custom of making jokes on December 28th

Nowadays, it is in the media that jokes are made to reach more people, with the aim of making them fall in love with the “princess”. They also do pranks on famous people that are broadcast nationally.

Now, with the use of social networks, it is expected that there will be endless jokes being shared.

Why is the press spreading jokes on December 28?

The joke in the press dates back to the 19th century, when in the newspaper “El Liberal” journalist Mariano de Cavia published an article on November 25, 1891 announcing a fire that destroyed the Prado Museum. The next day, he explained that he meant to denounce the state of Madrid’s art galleries to prevent a possible accident.

Even though it’s not an April Fool’s Day, his example has impacted and inspired other colleagues.

The ABC newspaper details that it included its first trick on December 28, 1905, when it published a story, accompanied by a photograph, announcing the demolition of Madrid’s Segovia Street Viaduct.

The photo montage caused many worried readers to approach the area around the Viaduct to verify the news.

In other parts of the world it is not celebrated on December 28, but on April 1 and is known by different names: in Italy as Pesce d’Aprile, in Canada as Poisson d’avril, in Portugal and Brazil they call it the Day of Lies .and in Austria, Switzerland and Germany Erster April is celebrated. Both in Australia and in the United States and Great Britain is a fool’s day.
