Millions of voters across the UK will cast their ballots on Thursday, July 4, to elect the House of Commons and a new government. Voters will elect 650 MPs representing their constituencies or local areas, and the leader of the political caucus that wins the majority of MPs will become prime minister. Who are the most prominent faces in this election and what are their track records? We explain them.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party is expected to lose to the main opposition, the centre-left Labour Party, after 14 years in power under five different prime ministers.
The Conservative and Labour parties have traditionally dominated British politics under the UK’s first past the post electoral system, making it difficult for smaller constituencies to gain representation in Parliament.
But also competing are members of the Liberal Democrats, the Reform Party, the Scottish National Party and the Green Party.
Here are the main political movements, who leads them and what they promise:
The ruling Conservative Party
The group is led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, 44.
The current Prime Minister came to power in October 2022, when he inherited a Conservative Party and an economy in crisis after the short mandate of Liz Truss.
In the last election they won 202 seats.
