Super glue test: – Remove winner

It’s amazing what you can fix with super glue, whether you’re gluing cracked plastic, broken ceramic, various pieces of wood, metal or whatever.

The term superglue is often used for a type of glue that hardens extra quickly (usually 60 seconds), and is usually based on cyanoacrylate.

Extensive testing

Svenske Testfacts, in collaboration with the German laboratory PZT, has tested nine different types of superglue. Some of them are also sold in Norway.

The whole test with all the results can be seen in Test facts.

Various adhesive products have been tested in several scenarios, where the laboratory has glued pieces of aluminum, wood, plastic and ceramic and measured how much force is required to separate the glued parts.

In a separate test, two pieces of glued aluminum were also immersed in a 24-hour water bath and checked for how well the glue adhered, at either 20 degrees Celsius or 40 degrees Celsius.

Best Loctite

Two products from Loctite were entered in the test, and both grabbed the first two places. The best results are coming Loctite Super gel strength glue with 8.3 out of 10 possible points. This glue is also the most expensive in testing and costs NOK 23 per gram in Sweden, but it is also the glue that is recommended to be used in the least amount by the manufacturer.

– It was a little surprising to us that it performs so much better than others. We followed the manufacturer’s dosing instructions, which is less than half the amount of glue as the others, test lead Thorsten Kutzner at PZT told Testfact.

The superglue strength gel scored highest on aluminum which was glued both after 60 seconds and 24 hours, and after a day in minus 20 degrees, and also best on ceramics. However, the “little brother” max precision scored higher after 24 hours in 40 degrees, and thus took second place in the test with 7.3 points.

Glue is not glue – see our guide

On wood, measured after 24 hours, it was Biltema’s superglue that pulled the longest straw, where a force of 1476 N (Newtons) was required to separate the pieces again. This glue costs only NOK 3 per gram.

Taken together, however, it is super universal glue from Clas Ohlson who occupies the third position behind two Loctite products. It also came out fairly well in most tests and scored highly in workouts that included temperature extremes, but included weaker ones after a shower.

Move

Two of the superglue products get 0 points after 60 seconds when two pieces of aluminum are glued together, and that is the Stanley Quick setting super glue and the Uhu Max repair power.

They both got a bad total score, because this particular exercise made up 30 percent of the total score. Ironically, both will come out best when the same piece has been in the water bath for 24 hours.

The latter, however, states a drying time of 5 minutes on the package and scores well when 24 hours have passed. We also add that the Max repair power is not the top model of Uhus – it’s called Max repair extreme. But it also has a stated curing time of 5 minutes.
