As Queen Elizabeth II sleeps at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday afternoon, Prince Charles of Wales becomes King Charles III.
That is the law in England. A country should never be without a king.
However, the official inauguration took place only on Saturday, during a solemn ceremony at the Palace of St. James in London.
The Council of Accessions declared at 11.04 Norwegian time that the country’s new king would be King Charles III.
– Have to make up his own role
– It feels really strong. I honestly admit that when they shouted “God save the king”, I got goosebumps, because it’s a cry we haven’t heard in 70 years, historian Ole Jørgen Schulsrud-Hansen told TV 2.
– New roles will now be created. The king must create his own role, says Schulsrud-Hansen.
Charles’ wife Camilla also had to accept a new role, she is now Queen consort of England.
– There hasn’t been a king with the title “king” in 70 years in Great Britain. Now you also get a consort, which is a queen without a constitutional role, added Schulsrud-Hansen.
Thank you for your sympathy
The first part of the inauguration is the declaration of the Accession Council. The second part consists of King Charles’ announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s passing and then his own royal declaration.
– Ladies and gentlemen, it is my sad duty to announce the passing of your beloved mother, the Queen. I know how deeply the entire nation, and I think I can say the whole world, sympathizes with me in the irreparable loss we have suffered. “It is a great comfort to me to know the compassion shown to me, my sister and brother, and that the immense warmth and support extended to our entire family,” said King Charles III.
With the Bible in his right hand, he finally read out the royal declaration, in which he pledged to look after the citizens and interests of the country and follow his mother’s example.
The proclamation will also be read in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, in addition to London.
