Quito, Oct 18 (EFE).- Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Juan Carlos Holguín, this Tuesday held talks with Britain’s Secretary of State for the Americas, Jesse Norman, to talk about visas and coordination at the UN Security Council, among issues other.
Ecuador’s foreign minister, on his Twitter account, indicated that he also discussed with Norman about commercial relations between the two countries and security issues which he did not detail.
“We made up for a decade of lost time. Today we spoke with the UK Foreign Office Secretary of State, Jesse Norman, about commercial relations, security concerns, progress on visa exemptions and our coordination for the Security Council,” Holguín wrote.
Ecuador’s head of diplomacy made this announcement at a time when discussions have opened in the country about Britain’s decision to remove visa requirements for Colombian and Peruvian nationals visiting it as tourists or for business, for a period of up to six months.
In some political circles in Ecuador, the fact that Ecuador has not succeeded in getting the UK to give equal treatment to Ecuadorian citizens who still need a visa to travel has come under fire.
In addition, a virtual meeting between Holguín and Norman discussed the possibility of coordination around Ecuador’s participation in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member starting next January.
The body consists of fifteen members, five of whom are permanent (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States), all with veto power.
