LATEST: British authorities have declared a state of emergency on Friday evening due to the heatwave in the country.
Extreme heat has been reported and a yellow warning has been issued on Sunday and a red alert has been issued on Monday and Tuesday in the United Kingdom, reports Sky News.
The heatwave that continues to hit the UK over the weekend could have far-reaching consequences for people and infrastructure.
Red danger warning
The UK Met Office wrote in a danger warning:
- Many will experience negative health effects, not just those most vulnerable to extreme heat, which can cause serious illness or be a hazard to life.
- There will be a need for changes in work practices and daily routines.
- High risk of failure in heat sensitive systems and equipment, which can result in loss of electricity and other essential services, such as water and cell phone services.
- More people tend to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers, leading to an increased risk of accidents.
- Road delays and possible road closures, as well as delays and cancellations of rail and air travel.
Already on Friday, the rail company, Avanti West Coast, warned that some departures could be canceled at short notice over the weekend, due to the heatwave.
