Sunak led the Tories selection process – but the final twist will be interesting

Hunt made his first appearance with Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi. Also in 2019, Hunt is struggling to become the leader of the party. Then he made it to the final round, but was badly beaten by Boris Johnson.

To BBC afterwards he said that Sunak was a man of integrity and “one of the nicest people” he had met in British politics.

– That’s why I would be proud to have him as the next prime minister, said Hunt.

Apart from serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs, he also served as Minister of Health and Minister of Culture.

Sunak is the first of Johnson’s government ministers to resign during last week’s upheaval. He was considered one of the favorites in the presidential race, and received the most votes in the first round of elections.

This is how Johnson’s successor was chosen

There are still six candidates for the position of party leader in the Conservative Party. Whoever becomes the leader of the party also becomes prime minister.

Here’s what the vote was like among eligible Conservative Party voters on Wednesday:

Rishi Sunak (42), former finance minister, got 88 votes

Penny Mordaunt (49), Secretary of State, received 67 votes

Liz Truss (46), former Secretary of State, received 50 votes.

Kemi Badenoch (42), former Minister of Equality, received 40 votes.

Tom Tugendhat (48), chairman of the foreign affairs committee, received 37 votes and

Suella Braverman (42), Attorney General, received 32 votes.

In Wednesday’s round, Nadhim Zahawi, the current finance minister, and Jeremy Hunt, the former foreign minister, received less than 30 votes. Then both of them exited the dance. And now Jeremy Hunt has stated that he supports Sunak’s candidacy.

Who will come out?

Thursday is the second round of voting. The plan is to have another round on Friday, and on Monday if needed. Penny Mordaunt gets fewer votes than Sunak currently, but she is popular with the wider population and in opinion polls she is more popular than Sunak.

If there are four candidates left, they will be asked if they want to enter the final round of the election. By next Thursday at the latest, there will be two candidates left.

And in the final primary between these two candidates, all members of the Conservative Party could participate. It will then be interesting to see if Mordaunt outsmarts Sunak – if he manages to hold out so far.

Who is Rishi Sunak?

He was born on 12 May 1980 and is a British politician. He was elected to Parliament in 2015 for Richmond (Yorks). Sunak’s parents were Indians who had emigrated from East Africa. He stepped down as Finance Minister just moments after Health Minister Sajid Javid stepped down.
