The issue of migrants crossing illegally from France to Britain via small rubber boats has long been debated.
The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has turned the matter into a fight, and vowed to “stop the boat, once and for all”, wrote Daily mail.
Current legislation gives people arriving into the UK by boat the right to stay in the country to have their asylum application examined.
If their case is accepted, they can apply to stay.
But under the new law, introduced on Tuesday morning, migrants will be barred from seeking asylum, as well as barred from returning to Britain. reports the BBC.
In addition, they will send some of them to Rwanda.
Most of the migrants arriving by boat are from countries such as Albania, Afghanistan, Iran and Syria.
In other words, they risk being shipped 6,500 km further, to a foreign continent.
– This action will create a deterrent effect, Sunak said.
Promote international legislation
The UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, claimed that the government’s proposal for the new law was in line with international law.
When Braverman presented the proposal to Parliament on Tuesday, he made it clear that it did not violate human rights.
– I believe that this bill complies with international obligations, he said.
Braverman stated during the presentation that those arriving in England in small boats must also be jailed for 28 days without the possibility of being released on bail.
Tuesday morning Braverman admits However, the proposal pushed the boundaries of international law, but he also insisted that it would not violate them.
– Strict rules won’t stop them
However, the bill has faced opposition from human rights organizations who believe that Rwanda is not a safe place and such a law would violate human rights.
Among other things, the British Red Cross said such a law would do little to stop people who had risked their lives to live in safety.
– Time and time again we hear that they have no prior knowledge of the UK asylum system, so making it stricter isn’t going to stop them, the organization said.
Rwanda has also been accused of trying to look better by taking in refugees, and constantly running away more accusations about human rights violations.
But even though the British Government promises a firmer grip against illegal migrants, no promises have been kept so far.
Wanted to send migrants to Rwanda last year
No migrants have been sent to Rwanda, but the British government wanted to send them to the African country last June.
Because on June 14, one plane was ready on the runway, and was supposed to transport seven asylum seekers to Rwanda.
But then the European Court of Human Rights stepped in, and grounded the flights at the last minute.
Since then, the so-called “Rwanda Plan” has been put on hold.
Very high number of “channel migrants”.
Rishi Sunak is expected to travel to Paris this Friday to meet French President Emmanuel Macron.
The meeting will be the first between the UK and France since 2018 and questions of illegal migrants will be on the agenda.
In 2022, 45,755 migrants crossed the strait between Britain and France.
This is the highest number recorded since statistics on this began in 2018.
So far this year, nearly 3,000 migrants have crossed the Strait.
Many also lost their lives on the dangerous journey.
