The UK Foreign Secretary for Brexit, David Frost, said on Friday, October 15, that the European Union’s (EU) proposal on the Northern Ireland Protocol was insufficient and that the bloc should change the oversight role of the EU Court of Justice.

In an interview with American outlet Politico, Frost pointed out that significant changes are needed to resolve the problems that Brexit is causing in Northern Ireland. “We are aware that the EU is making efforts, but there is still a long way to go,” he said.

Frost pointed out that “protocol oversight issues” by the EU Court of Justice “should be taken seriously.”

He explained that the protocol was signed at an “extraordinary” moment and it was known that some of its elements could not be implemented in practice.

The EU this week announced its proposal to modify some elements of the Northern Ireland Protocol signed as part of the Brexit agreement in 2020 to regulate trade relations between Northern Ireland, part of the UK, and the Republic of Ireland, an EU member. .

The proposal, with elements to facilitate trade between the UK and Northern Ireland, includes a simplified approval process for trade that facilitates food supply and reduces customs processes for products.

Britain argued that the protocol was hastily signed and called for some changes to the document to be allowed to facilitate trade in certain goods with Northern Ireland.
