Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Ap) was horrified by the rocket attacks on Israel, and urged the parties not to escalate the situation.

– I was surprised by the massive rocket attack on Israel yesterday. Attacks on civilians are always unacceptable and must stop immediately. Any action that may contribute to escalating the situation should be avoided. I also fully support the UN’s efforts, said Huitfeldt in his statement to NTB.

Northern Israel was hit with a series of rockets from Lebanese territory on Thursday. On Friday night, Israel struck what they believed to be Hamas positions in the area.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs added that fortunately no casualties were reported in the attack, but the attack caused anxiety and fear in the population.

Huitfeldt also pointed to the Israeli police, who have stormed the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem twice this week, amid the fasting month of Ramadan.

– The pictures from al-Aqsa in Jerusalem in recent days are shocking. Stun grenades, rubber bullets and fireworks have no place in mosques. Everyone must now contribute to calming the situation so that the holiday can be celebrated peacefully and civilians are not harmed, he said.
