Borrell condemned the attack on the EU ambassador in Sudan

The High Representative for EU Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has reported on the attack on the EU ambassador in Sudan, Aidan O’Hara, amid fighting between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that exploded last Saturday.

“A few hours ago, the EU ambassador in Sudan was attacked in his own residence,” Borrell said in an official statement referring to the Irish diplomat.

“This is a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention. The security of diplomatic facilities and personnel is the primary responsibility of the Sudanese authorities and is an obligation under international law,” he added.

O’Hara was appointed EU ambassador to Sudan in August 2022 with the mission of coordinating European countries’ relations with Sudanese authorities “to promote common European interests and values ​​in Sudan”, according to an official statement.

O’Hara has 36 years experience working as a diplomat for Ireland and the EU, having posted in France, the Czech Republic, the UK, Ethiopia and Djibouti, where he represented the EU for the Intergovernmental Development Authority (IGAD).

He has also been director of Policy Planning at the Irish Foreign Office and has worked in press, protocol, economics and Europe at the Ministry.
