The sun from a cloudless sky. The temperature is close to 30 degrees. This is the prospect of southern Norway, as far as meteorologists can see.

Now they are worried it will go on too long. Then summer dreams can become a nightmare for many people.

– I am afraid that June will be dry, and I hope that the same will not be the case for July, state meteorologist Håkon Mjelstad told Dagbladet.

Hottest in Hardanger

On Friday, the sun warmed all over southern Norway, especially at Kvamsøy in the Hardangerfjord. There the temperature reached 26.4 degrees.

The islet is followed by another measuring point in Western Norway.

– Of the 20 above yesterday, 17 were in Western Norway, said Mjelstad.

He could also report on the sun and heat on Saturday, but now good weather is spreading across the country.

There is good news for Northern Norway, where on Friday the weather was gray and around ten degrees Celsius with an onshore wind.

– Right now, it seems that the high pressure is extending northwards, so the whole land gets periods of sunshine. It’s moving toward stay-and-sun days across the country, Mjelstad said.

Heat waves can cause a crisis

In southern Norway, temperatures on Saturday hover between 22 and 26 degrees, in northern Norway between 15 and 20 degrees.

After that, the famous summer pattern would set in, with heat increasing in the south, especially in Agder and Eastern Norway. In Northern Norway, there can be rain, and it’s around ten degrees in most places.

– In the north, it’s likely to be wettest on Sunday and Monday, then dry out for a week, says Mjelstad.

In Southern Norway it is very different, especially in Agder and in Eastern Norway. The sun and heat will continue there, and within a week it will reach a temporary peak.

– Looks like we could hit 30 degrees next week. That could happen as early as Friday, Mjelstad said.

– Does that mean that as far as the eye can see it will be sunny and warm?

– Yes, but we hope that something changes. We only had a scattered rain shower but that was useless for most things.

Afraid of repeating 2018

If the change is delayed, all the sun and heat will no longer be good news. Not for everyone.

– The farmers have to irrigate, says Mjelstad.

He thinks summers are likely to be very dry and hot in the south, with the consequences that this could have in nature.

– The probability of that happening is greater than we like.

– Are you afraid of a repeat of the dry summer in 2018?

– I can imagine it could happen. I hope not, but it’s starting to look that way, said state meteorologist Håkon Mjelstad.
