The England and Scotland women’s national teams meet at Hampden Park for the Nations League football final on Tuesday. There is more to the pot than just points in today’s tournaments.
Britain is fighting to qualify for next year’s Olympics in Paris. To get there, Sarina Wiegman’s crew may have to beat Scotland by a lot of goals. Namely, it will provide a group victory over the Netherlands.
The Netherlands and England are both nine points ahead from the last round of matches and also have an even head to head. However, the Dutch have a better goal difference of three goals compared to Wiegman’s men.
The Netherlands finished their Nations League match against third-placed Belgium. With an Orange win there, England should score in plenty against Scotland at Hampden Park.
No chance
If England qualify for the Paris Olympics, it could potentially benefit the Scottish players. In the Games, England played Great Britain, which opened the door for Scottish players to be part of the squad.
This has led some to question whether Scotland will give it their all at Hampden Park on Tuesday. Netherlands national team manager Andries Jonker described the situation as “bizarre”.
However, England manager Wiegman firmly denied that any form of match-fixing would take place.
– I understand that this is being discussed. But if you’ve seen our group, seen Scotland and know the history of Scotland and England, there’s no chance they’re going to give this game away. “They really want to beat England, and we certainly want to beat them,” he said.
– We are talking about meaningful competition (agreed games) will not happen, he added.

Norway is out
Wiegman couldn’t see how to avoid the slightly tricky situation that had arisen.
– It’s just about fair play, about football, and in football everyone wants to win, he said.
The Norwegian women’s national team had long been eliminated from the race for an Olympic ticket before the national league final against Austria on Tuesday.
