After three different winners in the last three Grands Prix, the increasingly competitive 2024 Formula 1 season will make its second trip of the year across the Atlantic for the popular – and often dramatic – Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

In a temporary break from the European season that will dominate F1’s summer months, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is hosting the ninth round of the year. F1 Sky Sports this weekend, on a partial road course that tends to produce exciting racing and also features the famous “Wall of Champions.”

Reigning champions Red Bull head to North America looking for revenge after a poor showing on the streets of Monaco last time out when they not only lost to race winners Ferrari, but also to McLaren and Mercedes.

Charles Leclerc’s first home win in the principality, and the Monegasque’s first in 22 months, reduced Max Verstappen’s title lead to 31 points with just a quarter of his record 24-race season completed.

And although McLaren’s Lando Norris failed to follow up his win in Miami and close out second place at Imola with another podium at the principality, he still entered the top three of the drivers’ championship for the first time since 2021 and collected 56 points. behind Verstappen.

Ferrari and McLaren also reduced Red Bull’s lead in the Constructors’ Championship, with the opening hour just 24 points apart.

Verstappen has won on F1’s last two visits to Montreal, but things could be different this year with the gap between the leading teams continuing to narrow and the lead situation changing from track to track.

The Canadian GP accounted for the largest number of viewers of the night in prime time F1 Sky Sports spectators in the UK and Ireland, with qualifying at 9pm on Saturday before the actual 70 lap race at 7pm on Sunday.
