– The decision follows an assessment of the letter from September 2021. It refers to media writing that offers of assistance were made to secure honorary degrees and citizenship for Saudi nationals, said a statement from Scotland Yard.
Police further said that no one was arrested or brought in for questioning in this case.
The head of the foundation – Michael Fawcett – stepped down last year following an internal investigation into the allegations. He initially agreed to end his duties following revelations about his relationship with a Saudi national.
Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz is said to have donated 1.5 million pounds, around 18 million kroner, to a restoration project of particular concern to Prince Charles.
There is no proof
Charles’ office said there was no evidence to support the allegations.
“The Prince of Wales is not aware of any alleged offer of honor or British citizenship on the basis of a charitable donation,” he said.
The foundation, which helps unemployed people get back to work and start small businesses, said they took the allegations very seriously.
The Charity Commission, which registers and oversees charities in England and Wales, said in November it had opened a formal investigation into donations received from Mahfouz’s charitable fund aimed at the Princes’ Foundation.
According to the commission, the Mahfouz Foundation was established to promote education in the UK about Middle Eastern culture, history, languages, literature and institutions.
Registered in Scotland
The Prince Charles Foundation is registered in Scotland. In September last year, Scotland’s Scottish Charity Regulator began its own investigation into reports that the foundation received cash from Russian financiers who had previously been convicted of money laundering.
The prince is said to have written a letter thanking Dmitry Leus for the money and suggesting that they could meet after the pandemic.
The foundation’s ethics committee rejected the donation after learning of Leus’ conviction in Russia in 2004. That conviction was later overturned, and he claims he was the victim of a politically motivated lawsuit.
