Airbnb doesn’t want a party in its apartment and has found the perfect informant: the neighbors

On May 9, Tripadvisor published results of a report in which he analyzed user trends from Australia, Japan, Singapore, UK and the US for the period June to August 2023. According to the document, 95% of those surveyed plan to take the same trip this year (42%) or more (53 %) by 2022. Also, 55% confirm that they will spend more money than last year, an attractive figure when taking into account inflation affecting the world economy.

Children go on a trip. Moreover, the report shows that young users are more excited to travel than other age groups. In this case, 49% of ‘genzers’ and 31% of ‘millennials’ say they want to travel this summer. On the other hand, two of the ten most visited destinations – Barcelona is fifth – are in the United States: New York and Orlando. Perhaps for this reason, Airbnb broke some news on May 24 about its anti-party policies for the upcoming vacation in the United States.

Upcoming US holiday. Inside it document Titled ‘Anti-party crackdown for summer vacations’, Airbnb outlines rules across the United States to reduce the risk of “unauthorized and disruptive parties” to “unauthorized and disruptive parties.” Holiday Weekend” on Memorial Day and July 4th. Memorial Day is celebrated on May 29 to honor US soldiers who died in action, and July 4th is US Independence Day.

High risk backup. According to the text, an anti-party system planned for those dates would monitor guest requests, classify attempted reservations for one or two nights as “high risk” and even prevent such reservations in certain cases. To do so, Airbnb will review, “among other considerations”, each guest’s review history, identifying the number of positive and negative reviews, and when the booking was made: last minute, in advance, etc.

Give it up, neighbor. On the other hand, Airbnb calls for neighborhood collaboration, encouraging neighbors to “report any concerns via the 24/7 Neighborhood Support line.” This is a channel created so that residents near rental homes can contact the company in an emergency, such as “a party being held at a home believed to be listed on Airbnb.” The text indicates that complaints about the parties will be forwarded to the security department, where they will be responsible for taking prompt action if there is an incident.

Noise sensor. In addition, the company led by Brian Chesky is reporting the possibility of offering free noise sensors to US hosts. This is a device developed by NoiseAware that makes it possible to measure sound both inside the house and on the same terrace or garden. He method It’s easy, because the host can check the noise level through the mobile app.

Finally, the text indicates that Airbnb will urge guests to accept the company’s anti-party policy. If the rules are not met, the company will remove the guest from the platform.

Fewer parties for three years. According to Airbnb, these steps were tested in a pilot they ran last year during Memorial Day, with such good results that they were implemented a few weeks later on July 4th. In addition, the company confirmed that following the adoption of its global anti-party policy in August 2020, complaints for this reason have decreased by 55% annually worldwide.

Cotton test. Airbnb has been the target of a lot of criticism in recent years because of the ramifications of its business model in the spaces in which it operates. The accelerated gentrification process that it is a part of has had a serious impact on cities and has fueled the housing crisis that is currently being experienced around the world. In this regard, it recently became known that Consell de Mallorca intends to penalize Airbnb with a fine of between 125,000 and 400,000 for not removing listings for multi-family homes operating as tourist homes without a license in Palma de Mallorca.

The other side of the coin. Based on account Diario de Mallorca, Brian Chesky’s firm has filed various allegations that Consell has knocked out. Thus, Airbnb’s anti-party policy is really one that seeks to ensure the continuation of its activities by appeasing neighbors, as well as disguising services with serious consequences for the environments in which they operate. In fact, in cities like Athens a highly organized social movement has articulated against Airbnb, a company that acquired a profit net of 1.763 million euros in 2022.
