Albares acknowledges “constructive spirit” in UK in Gibraltar with “ball in court” for deal

CORDOBA, May 15. (EUROPEAN PRESS TELEVISION) –

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has acknowledged this Monday the “constructive spirit” in the United Kingdom for the conclusion of an agreement that promotes “a zone of mutual prosperity between Gibraltar and Campo de Gibraltar”, although in the same way He has indicated that “the ball is in court England” for that goal to fruition.

In statements to the media in Córdoba after meeting with representatives of the Halal Institute, Albares argued that “for an agreement two parties are needed” after “we put a global agreement on the table” to such an extent that an outcome requires “not just a Spanish proposal”, but “acceptance by Great Britain”.

“We hope soon”, stressed Albares, who assured that “we are ready for a deal”.

The British government assured in March that it would continue to work “intensively” to reach this agreement with the European Union in Gibraltar after Brexit, a spokesperson for the UK Ministry told Europa Press when asked whether the recent agreement between London and Brussels in Northern Ireland The protocol, called the ‘Windsor framework’, will allow for the opening of negotiations around Batu, which have already held twelve rounds.

“We are working intensively to reach an agreement that can help achieve a prosperous future for Gibraltar and Campo,” said the spokesperson, who declined to elaborate on the status of the talks at the time.

London, Brussels and the Spanish Government urged that negotiations on the Northern Ireland Protocol, agreed on February 27 by British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and European Commission President, Ursula Von der Leyen, and the Gibraltar Council were two distinct and separate processes, even though the negotiators were the same actors: Foreign Minister, James Cleverly, and Vice President of the European Commission, Maros Sefcovic.

London defended that the basis of the agreement was the political framework agreed between Britain and Spain on 31 December 2020, which provided for the closing of the Gates but raised border control issues at Gibraltar’s port and airport.
