For the past two weeks, crocodiles in Sugar Land, Texas, have been spreading fear among residents. Two kayaks have been attacked by crocodiles.
– I’ve been rowing in this water for over 20 years and we’ve never had a crocodile attack, Dee Connors, president of the Greater Houston Rowing Club, told locals. KHOU TV channel.
The first attack occurred after an elderly man allegedly hit the crocodile with one of his oars and the crocodile responded by biting the boat. The boat began to sink, but the man managed to land.
But it wasn’t an isolated attack. A week later it happened again.
– Another rower paddled behind me and one of the alligators bit the end of the boat, Connors said.
This man also managed to land even though his ship was damaged.
– It’s scary. I started pedaling faster when I was in that area, Connors admits.
Killed by crocodile
Unusual
The area is home to many crocodiles, but rarely do they attack boats or people, said Jonathan Warner, of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Independent.
– The fact that they attacked ships was so random and unusual for us to receive reports like this, Warner said.
He believes the attack was due to a failed attempt to find food. One reason is because the alligator is said to have let go of the boat quickly.
– The breeding season is now over – and as such, most crocodile movements are related to feeding behavior. I think the crocodile thought it was prey, took a chance, and realized it wasn’t food.
He still said that they had taken action in the water. They have removed a crocodile and put up clear signs to warn people traveling in the water.
Some theories
However, some have questioned whether the attack was caused by some vegetation being removed from near the edge of Oyster Creek, and this made the crocodiles feel even more threatened.
Warner said, however, it would surprise him if that was the reason at this time because the breeding season was over and it was therefore unlikely they would become so aggressive.
– It would surprise me if it was an aggressive woman at the end of the year, Connors said.
He further believes that another theory could be that falling water levels due to a drought in the US have caused more crocodiles to congregate in the same place.
– If there are three pools, and two of them dry up, they will be in the pool that still has water, says Warner.
