Backlash after Meghan Jeremy Clarkson’s statement

“I hate him… At night I can’t sleep. I lay there gritting my teeth and dreaming of the day he was forced to walk naked through the streets of every British city while the crowd screamed “shame!” and throw dirt at him”.

Misguided remarks about Duchess Meghan came from British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson in an article in a British newspaper Sun.

Backlash has not been long in coming, and criticism has been thrown at the former “Top Gear” profile, who has been accused of hate speech towards Prince Harry’s wife.

Now more than 60 British MPs have written to The Sun’s editor, Victoria Newton, to demand that the newspaper take “action” and issue an apology to the Duchess, writes Guard.

Unacceptable misogyny

Clarkson’s newspaper comments were published on Sunday after the Netflix documentary Prince Harry and Meghan, in which the couple spoke about the many hateful messages Meghan received in particular and about the conflict with the royal family.

The Sun later withdrew the column at the request of Clarkson, who said he accepted the self-criticism and “will be more careful in the future”. However, he was roundly criticized for not apologizing to Meghan.

Now a number of politicians have joined the criticism and condemned Clarkson for his misogyny and violent comments.

– This type of language has no place in our country, and it is unacceptable that attempts to publish it in national newspapers are unacceptable, the letter said.

Additionally, they demanded that The Sun take immediate “action” against Clarkson and an apology to Meghan.

The letter has been signed by politicians from all major UK parties: Tories, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens and SNP.

Never received so many complaints

In just two days, Clarkson’s newspaper comments have become the UK’s most complained about article, reports Sky News.

By 9am Tuesday, UK press regulator IPSO had received more than 17,500 complaints about the article.

Clarkson’s article also received more complaints than the IPSO received in all of 2021 in total.

Jeremy Clarkson’s own daughter has also spoken out against her father’s mention of Duchess Meghan.

On Twitter, Clarkson himself wrote that the column was an “awkward reference to a scene from Game of Thrones” and that he was sorry it caused so much pain.

However, he has yet to apologize for comments such as hating the Duchess of Sussex.
