Britain appoints Alison Mary Blake as new Governor of the Falkland Islands

The United Kingdom of Great Britain today confirmed the appointment Alison Mary Blake as the new Governor of the Falkland Islands, succeeding Nigel Phillips.

In a brief statement, the UK government reported: “Alison Blake has been appointed Governor of the Falkland Islands and His Highness Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands successively Nigel Phillips. Blake will be in office for July 2022.

According to the Foreign Territory Office of Foreign Affairs, Blake arrived at the post after two years as ambassador in Kabul, Afghanistan; two others in Dhaka as British High Commissioner, and other diplomatic functions to serve Queen Elizabeth II.

Alison Mary Blake Nigel Phillips, who will remain in office until July, will assume the governorship he has been in since September 2017. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the war for sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands which is disputed by Argentina and Britain and which began on April 2 with the landing of Argentine troops on the island. This year, on both the islanders’ and Argentine’s side, a series of commemorations, memories and actions are planned to remember an event that marks the history of the two countries that have faced the sovereignty of the archipelago since 1833.

Governor’s Duties

According to the local Executive’s official website, governors are appointed by the Queen at the suggestion of her Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the UK. “According to the Constitution, the governor has the authority of the Queen. However, governors usually act only on the advice of the (local) Executive Board. On the advice of the Executive Council, the governor has the power to summon the council, dissolve the Legislative Assembly, hold elections and impose royal sanctions on legislation.

“Following the advice of the Advisory Committee, the Governor will be able to grant pardons to persons convicted of any crime, as well as commute the sentences of anyone convicted on the islands,” the official website reports. The governor is also responsible for the defense and internal security of the Falklands (with the exception of policing matters), although the governor is constitutionally obligated to consult the commander of British forces on the matter, it shows on the British government’s website in the islands.
