A ceremonial silver cross with bits of wood that the Vatican says came from the cross used to crucify Jesus Christ was blessed in England on Wednesday, ahead of being used at the upcoming coronation of King Charles III early next month. .

Pope Francis presents two “Vera Cruz” fragments, one measuring 5 millimeters and the other measuring 1 centimeter, on the occasion of the coronation of the king and his wife Camila on May 6 in London.

These shards were shaped into small crosses and incorporated into the overall design, visible behind the pink crystal gems.

The Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, blessed the new Welsh Cross before dignitaries and parishioners at a service held in Llandudno, in the north of England.

The cross will be taken to London to lead the coronation procession.

The cross “speaks about our Christian faith, our heritage, our resources and our commitment to sustainability,” said the archbishop.

“We are also delighted that its first use will be to guide Their Royal Highnesses (Charles and Camilla) to Westminster Abbey for the coronation ceremony,” he added.

Charles gave the Welsh Cross to the Anglican Church in Wales on its centennial.

Designer Michael Lloyd took two years to create and is made from recycled silver ingots and Welsh slate and wood chips.

After the coronation, it will be shared by the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches in Wales.

Charles himself applied the monarch’s mark of authenticity – a leopard’s head – to the silver element of the cross during the past year in London.
