Construction of the UK’s largest community wind farm is underway

Construction has officially begun at Kirk Hill Wind Farm in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire, marking the start of an innovative project that will build the UK’s largest community-owned wind farm. Led by Ripple Energy, this initiative aims to usher in a new era of energy ownership and sustainability.

This ambitious project involved the installation of eight state-of-the-art wind turbines on site, four of which have already been successfully built. With a combined capacity of 18.8 MW, the Kirk Hill Wind Farm has the potential to provide electricity to approximately 20,000 homes and businesses, significantly reducing their dependence on conventional energy sources.

What sets this project apart is its unique ownership structure. More than 5,600 people, representing households and businesses across Scotland, England and Wales, have collectively invested in wind power, enjoying shared ownership and benefits. Through this collaborative effort, cooperative members will not only have a direct stake in the project, but will also see a positive impact on their energy bills.

Once the Kirk Hill Wind Farm begins operations in early 2024, participating members can expect major savings on their energy costs. According to conservative estimates, average savings in the first year could be as high as £269, so households and businesses can direct these funds to other essential needs or invest in additional renewable energy projects.

The construction of the UK’s largest community-owned wind farm is an important milestone in the country’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future. By embracing innovation and encouraging broad ownership, projects like the Kirk Hill Wind Farm have the potential to revolutionize the energy sector, empowering individuals and communities to actively contribute to the fight against climate change.
