Cuba and Britain will this week sign a Political Dialogue and Cooperation agreement that will form the basis of bilateral relations on issues such as economic development, the environment and human rights.

The signing will take place during the visit of the British Minister for the Americas and the Caribbean, David Rutleywhich arrived this Tuesday in Havana, according to reported British embassy on the island.

“As part of our commitment to strengthening ties between the UK and Cuba, I look forward to signing the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement,” Rutley said in a statement.

The British minister added that this document would allow the UK to address “important issues for both sides such as human rights and the embargo” in Havana.

In his first official visit, Rutley is scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and representatives from various UN agencies.

He also plans to meet with local entrepreneurs and members of the Cuban Chevening graduate community, to learn about the country’s social and economic situation.

Britain became a member of the European Union (EU) when the community bloc signed a Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement with Cuba in 2017, but later left the European Union. In this way, London will now formalize its own communication mechanism with the island.
