In short
- Every year hundreds of people gather in Gloucestershire to take part in the annual ‘Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake’ race.
- Participants threw themselves down a steep slope after spinning the cheese. The winner gets to keep the cheese.
- Several people are injured every year, but the tradition continues, despite warnings from emergency services.
Every year this unusual gathering in Gloucestershire makes headlines around the world. British broadcaster BBC covered the convention, minute by minute, in its own online studio.
Every year beforehand, authorities and police issued stern warnings about the dangers of taking part in the race.
However, participants from all over the world opposed the warning, also this year.
In short, the race consists of a “cheese expert” rolling a three to four kilogram wheel of cheese down a very steep and hilly slope, 180 meters long. The participants then dropped down to chase the cheese to the bottom.
Whoever reaches the bottom of the hill first will win the race.
Present?
The winner gets to keep the cheese.
Warning
Ahead of this year’s version of the race, officially called “Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake”, emergency services as before came out and warned about the security situation.
A local group called SAG, which includes the ambulance service, declared the race unsafe.
According to local newspapers Stroud moments Race organizers have not provided detailed plans regarding the security scheme before the race starts on Monday 27 May.
– Cheese rolls at Cooper Hill are a tradition unique to our area, and we have no plans to stop them, said Assistant Police Chief Arman Matheson Local newspaper.
– However, we once again declare that the event is unsafe, and therefore it is our duty to address this issue.
Several people were injured
Every year, several people are injured when they fall down very hilly slopes. But according to The Guardian, conditions this year were good, with the mud soft and slippery after recent rain.
The competition is held in classes separated by gender.
– The British are crazy, says Tom, the German entry who won the first of many races Guard.
To BBC He summarized his experience as follows;
– Once the cheese is rolling, there’s no turning back.
Abby Lamp from the US state of North Carolina won this year’s women’s class, running the fastest downhill. He also won this award in 2022.
– You just have to roll, he told the press soon after.
Faint
Last year’s winner of the same class, Canada’s Delaney Irving, struggled. When he reached the foot of the hill, he was unconscious.
– I remember running and hitting my head. “Then I woke up in the first aid tent,” he added BBC after last year’s race.
According to The Guardian, the cheese wheel rolled down the slope at a speed of more than 110 kilometers per hour. Apparently, the fastest participants descended the slope in almost 50 minutes.
