After ten rounds of VAR at Eliteserien, the system was thoroughly evaluated on Wednesday at the VAR center in Oslo.
Among other things, especially the use of time in marginal situations which became the main referee Terje Hauge’s focus after the evaluation, related to the challenges for VAR in Eliteserien.
– A complex situation that we have to spend time on. With the help of experience and knowledge that we share in the group, I think we will grow with the task. Individual situations will always be discussed, but we will do everything we can to reduce the time spent now that we have gained experience, he told TV 2.
In terms of “Pitch review”, i.e. situations where the referee goes to the screen to judge, an average of 2 minutes 15 seconds is used so far this season. This is a number that many would like to see lower.
– We want things to run smoother, but in the end it’s about making the right decision. So until now, we are satisfied that we have a high success rate for the decisions we have made, said supreme judge Espen Eskås.
The head referee also acknowledged mistakes made by VAR six times. This applies to situations where VAR should have intervened, but didn’t.
This applies to two situations where a yellow card should have turned red, two goals that should have been disapproved and two penalty kicks.
The backdrop for this is the high list, which Hauge says they have now taken down.
– That’s not good enough, we totally agree with that. “Then it turned out that four situations came from the first three rounds, when we just joined, but then we managed to adjust it a bit by moving the roster down a bit,” Hauge told NTB.
The version of VAR that will be used in Eliteserien is the “cheap” version of what you have in major leagues and championships. In Eliteserien, five to 13 camera angles are used.
In comparison, 42 different camera angles were used in each stadium during the World Cup in Qatar. The same goes for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and other top leagues and tournaments in Europe.
But Hauge is adamant that the “cheap” version is more than adequate.
– This, I think at least, is about the fact that we just need to gain experience, and with experience we will do it faster with a little understanding of this and the interaction with the VAR and the replay operator will also go faster.
